Heritage Conservation Committee - Chandernagore
Chandernagore, a historic town on the western bank of the Hooghly River, 30 km north of Kolkata, boasts a unique French colonial legacy spanning over 250 years. Established as a French trading post in 1673 and a permanent settlement in 1688, it merged with West Bengal in 1954. Known for its French-style architecture, the Sacred Heart Church, the Institut de Chandernagore, and the vibrant Jagaddhatri Puja, Chandernagore is a cultural gem reflecting Indo-French heritage. The Heritage Conservation Committee of the Chandernagore Municipal Corporation (CMC) is constituted under the West Bengal Municipal Corporation Act, 2006, Section 402, which mandates the preservation of heritage buildings and precincts within municipal areas. The committee is assigned with task of identifying, protecting, and promoting Chandernagore's historical structures and cultural assets, ensuring sustainable urban development while preserving its colonial legacy.
